Abstract: The numbers of hibernating bats in the Voorberg-Jezuïetenberg marl quarry complex, southwest of Maastricht, were monitored between 1987 and 2020 by means of annual counts at the turn of the year.

Fort Steendorp (ten oosten van Temse, Oost-Vlaanderen, België) is een groot voormalig militair bakstenen fort, dat tegenwoordig een van de belangrijkste overwinteringsplaatsen voor vleermuizen is in Vlaanderen, België.

In Vlaanderen worden 26 verschillende mergelgroeven jaarlijks gecontroleerd op overwinterende vleermuizen, 18 in het Maasbekken en acht in het Scheldebekken.

In Nederland (en Vlaanderen) worden sinds de jaren 1930 overwinterende vleermuizen onderzocht in veelal ondergrondse winterverblijven. In de loop van de tijd is de focus verschoven van ecologisch en fysiologisch onderzoek naar monitoring.

De winter van 2021 markeerde een bijzondere periode van vleermuistellingen in winterverblijven.

In the past three decennia, a dozen mammal species were saved from the brink of extinction through conservation efforts such as reintroductions. The European mink (Mustela lutreola), as the most critically endangered mammal of Europe, requires increased conservation efforts to survive.

Around 15 February 1429 (proleptic Gregorian date 24th February) a male sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) was washed ashore on the island of Biervliet (figure 1), just inside the mouth of the Westerschelde (Western Scheldt) in the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands.

Abstract: In barn owl (Tyto alba) pellets, a skull from a field vole (Microtus agrestis) was found with an abnormal dental pattern. The enamel ridge of the first right lower molar displayed a ‘capital M’ outline.
