    De Limburgse mergelgroeves vormen belangrijke winterverblijfplaatsen voor vleermuizen. De Koelebosch-groeve, waar jaarlijks honderden vleermuizen overwinteren, was sinds 2003 vanwege veiligheid voor mensen gesloten. Daardoor konden geen wintertellingen meer plaatsvinden en was niet bekend hoe het met de vleermuisaantallen ging. In 2018 is de groeve opgeknapt, waardoor tellingen weer mogelijk zijn.
