In a mixed forest south-west of Tilburg, red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) and Siberian chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus) seem to live together without disturbing each other too much. Different studies suggest a possible negative effect of Siberian chipmunks on forest communities. To research these populations, both squirrels need to be monitored. The main question of this study is therefore ‘What is the best method of visual counts to have the highest probability of detecting red squirrels and Siberian chipmunks?’
