Re-mating in otter (Lutra lutra)

After the first observation of three morulas in the uterus of an otter (Lutra lutra) (Broekhuizen et al. 2004) a second observation of three morulas, together with three early-stage blastocysts, was made in April 2005. In the light of the short period of delayed implantation of blastocysts in the mucous membrane of the uterus we discuss the probability of this indicating re-mating and compared the evidence with the more frequent occurrence of superfoetation in the American mink (Mustela vison).
